Hair Foil
Pop up hair foil is a pre-cut format of aluminium hairdressing foil where each sheet is folded and stacked so it can be dispensed one at a time during a colour service. Unlike roll foil that requires cutting, pop up foil allows the colourist to work faster and more consistently, with less waste and no interruption to technique. Each Westwater Foil Co sheet is 15×30cm, the new professional standard size.
The professional standard for salon foiling is 12×27cm. The Retreat by Westwater Foil Co is produced at 15×30cm specifically because it is the size that removes every limitation the wrong dimensions create. This size accommodates a full-width section without adjustment, covers the full working length of every standard colour service, and folds cleanly without opening under the weight of product.
Roll foil requires the colourist to cut each sheet manually during the service, which slows application and introduces inconsistency in sheet size. Pop up foil is pre-cut and pre-folded, dispensing one sheet at a time for faster, cleaner application. For high-volume salons and precision colourists, pop up foil is the professional standard.
The embossed texture on professional hairdressing foil creates thousands of raised contact points across the foil surface. These points physically interlock with the irregular surface structure of hair, resisting lateral movement and keeping your section exactly where you place it. The recessed areas between the dots act as micro-reservoirs, when colour is applied, it distributes into those channels rather than pooling at edges, producing more even saturation across the entire section. The Retreat uses a random dot emboss pattern, which provides grip without compromising the flexibility needed for precise folding.
The thickness of a hairdressing foil directly determines how quickly it reaches processing temperature, how evenly that temperature distributes across the surface, and how accurately it responds to changes in the environment around it. A lighter gauge reaches thermal equilibrium faster — the foil responds to heat from the colour or lightener almost immediately, meaning the processing environment inside the fold stabilises quickly and holds consistently from root to tip. A lighter sheet also deforms more readily under light pressure, conforming more closely to the curved surface of a wrapped hair section for a tighter, cleaner fold.
Usage varies by technique and hair length. A full-head highlight typically uses 40–80 sheets. A balayage or partial colour may use 20–40 sheets. High-volume salons performing multiple colour services per day will move through a box of 500 sheets within one to two days!
Foil quality directly affects colour results. Low-grade foil tears during application, slips on the hair strand, and creates inconsistent saturation, leading to uneven lift and patchy results. Professional-grade hair foil like The Retreat is engineered for controlled folding, secure placement and consistent saturation from root to tip, giving the colourist full technical control throughout the service.
Westwater Foil Co combines a colourist's technical insight with design-forward aesthetics. Each foil sheet is engineered to support professional precision, embossed texture enhances grip, reduces slipping and improves placement control, giving colourists greater confidence during application. It also supports clean root placement and consistent saturation across every sheet.
Yes. Westwater Foil Co foils are produced from highest-grade recyclable aluminium. Used foils can be recycled via your yellow-lid kerbside bin, scrunch clean foils into a ball at least the size of a tennis ball before placing in the bin. Foils with significant product residue should be disposed of in general waste.
