Foil thickness isn't something most clients would ever think about. But for colourists working on complex lightening services, it's one of those variables that quietly affects the consistency of every result.

Foil conducts heat. That's part of its function in the colour process. A foil with consistent thickness conducts heat evenly across the entire section. This means the lightener or colour processes at a consistent rate from root to end, and from one section to the next across the full head. Foil that varies in thickness creates hot spots. Certain sections process faster than others. The result is inconsistency in lift across the head that a skilled colourist then has to manage or correct.
The fold behaviour changes
Thinner foil folds differently to properly gauged foil. It tends to crinkle at the fold line rather than forming a clean, sharp edge.
